The Yogyakarta Royal Orchestra was officially launched by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X on June 21, 2021, which is also World Music Day. Although it was just recently inaugurated, Yogyakarta Royal Orchestra is a revival of an earlier orchestra called Kraton Orcest Djogja

Kraton Orcest Djogja was started by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII around 1924. KPH Notonegoro brought it back to life in 2019, and it became the Yogyakarta Royal Orchestra. The formal launch happened in 2021.

Yogyakarta Royal Orchestra is a musical performance group owned by the Yogyakarta Palace. It was created to help promote and preserve traditional Javanese music for wider audiences.

Yogyakarta Royal Orchestra’s vision is to create harmony through high-value traditional music. The members of the Yogyakarta Royal Orchestra are trained palace servants (abdi dalem) who can play various Javanese instruments. Many of its performances tell stories, from ancient legends to contemporary themes of harmony and identity.
