Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia and stands out as one of Southeast Asia’s most remarkable temple sites. It sits on the border between Yogyakarta and Central Java and was built in the 9th century during the Mataram Kingdom. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Since 1991, Prambanan has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is well known for its tall stone towers, detailed carvings, and the famous legend of Roro Jonggrang, making it a true icon of Indonesian culture.

Main Attractions

The main attraction here is the 47-meter-tall Shiva Temple, called Candi Loro Jonggrang, which rises in the center of the site. Around the main temples, you’ll find hundreds of smaller perwara temples that once made up a large sacred complex. You can also see detailed stone reliefs depicting scenes from the Ramayana and walk through the expansive archaeological park.
