Punthuk Setumbu

Punthuk Setumbu is a well-known spot for watching the sunrise in Magelang, Central Java, just a 15-minute drive from Borobudur Temple. Since opening to visitors in the early 2000s, this hill has become famous for its sweeping views of Borobudur rising through the morning mist, with Mount Merapi, Mount Merbabu, and the Menoreh Hills in the distance. A short hike to the top gives visitors a chance to see one of Indonesia’s most photographed sunrise scenes.

Entrance tickets usually cost between IDR 20,000 and IDR 50,000 per person. The price depends on the type of visitor and the latest rules.

Tips

The best time to visit Punthuk Setumbu is just before sunrise. Arrive before 5 AM to catch the famous sunrise while the morning mist still covers Borobudur and the nearby valleys.

Book your ticket at least a day ahead, especially on weekends or holidays. Bring a jacket or warm clothes because it can get chilly early in the morning. Wear comfortable shoes for the short walk uphill to the viewpoint.
