Alun-Alun Kidul Yogyakarta
Alun-Alun Kidul Yogyakarta, known as Alkid to locals, is a historic public square on the south side of Keraton Yogyakarta. For centuries, it has been an open space linked to the royal palace and is still a popular gathering place. During the day, people can relax in the open area and see the famous twin banyan trees. At night, the square is filled with street food stalls, colorful pedal cars, and local attractions that draw families, couples, and tourists.
What to Do in Alun-alun Kidul Yogyakarta?
One of the most popular things to do at Alun-Alun Kidul is “Masangin”. Masangin is a traditional game in which visitors put on a blindfold and try to walk straight between the two famous twin banyan trees at the center of the square. People say that if you make it through, it means you have a pure heart and will have good luck.
You can rent bright pedal cars or electric vehicles, sample local street food, relax outside, or just take in the lively nightlife that makes this place unique. Many people also love taking photos here, especially after sunset when the lights create a festive atmosphere.
Best Time to Visit
Alun-Alun Kidul is open all day and night, but it’s most lively between 5 PM and 11 PM. In the evening, food vendors set up, rental vehicles light up the square with bright colors, and the area fills with people and activities.
The evenings are the best time to enjoy street food, watch people, and join in the different activities around the square.
