Candi Barong

Candi Barong is a Hindu temple complex located in the Batur Agung Hills east of Yogyakarta, near the Prambanan temple area. Believed to have been built during the 9th–10th centuries by the Ancient Mataram Kingdom, the temple is thought to have served as a place of worship or meditation for Hindu nobility. Unlike the more crowded temples around Prambanan, Candi Barong offers a peaceful atmosphere, surrounded by hills and rice fields, with panoramic views stretching toward Mount Merapi, making it a hidden gem for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

What to See in Candi Barong?

The temple complex has two main shrines on a terraced hilltop with views of the countryside. Experts think the temples were built for Vishnu, the Hindu god of preservation, and Dewi Sri, the Javanese goddess of rice and fertility, showing how important farming is in the area. 

A unique feature is the Kala head ornament above the temple niches, which looks like a mythical Barong figure and gave the temple its name. You can walk among the ancient buildings, take in the wide views of the Prambanan hills and Mount Merapi, and enjoy a quiet setting away from the busy crowds at bigger temple sites.

How to Get There?

Candi Barong is located in Sambirejo Village, Prambanan District, Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, approximately 45 minutes from Yogyakarta city center. Situated on the Batur Agung Hills, the site can be reached by car or motorcycle via winding uphill roads. While the route is more challenging than the journey to Prambanan Temple, visitors are rewarded with beautiful countryside scenery and sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.
