Plaosan Temple

Plaosan Temple is a beautiful Buddhist temple complex in Klaten Regency, Central Java, a few kilometers northeast of Prambanan Temple. Built in the 9th century during the Ancient Mataram Kingdom, it is one of the best examples of Buddhist architecture in Java. Plaosan stands out for its mix of Buddhist and Hindu features that reflect the marriage between the Buddhist princess Pramodhawardhani from the Sailendra Dynasty and the Hindu king Rakai Pikatan from the Sanjaya Dynasty. The temple is surrounded by rice fields and offers views of Mount Merapi. It combines historical value with natural beauty.

What to See

Plaosan Lor is the main highlight of the complex, featuring two nearly identical main temples side by side. Surrounding them are 58 Perwara temples, 116 Perwara stupas, and a Mandapa that was once used for ceremonies and religious events.

The temple features detailed carvings, well-preserved reliefs, Buddhist statues, and unique architecture that make Plaosan different from other nearby temples. South of the main complex is Plaosan Kidul, where you can explore the remains of more temples, stupas, and other archaeological structures that were once part of the larger sacred area.

Background Story of “Candi Kembar”

Plaosan is often called the “Twin Temple” (Candi Kembar) because the Plaosan Lor complex has two main temples. These temples are nearly the same in size, layout, and style, which gives them a symmetrical appearance that is rare among Javanese temples.

Many people think the nickname refers to Plaosan Lor and Plaosan Kidul as two identical temple complexes. In fact, it only describes the two main temples that stand side by side in Plaosan Lor.
