Taman Sari

Taman Sari Local Guide

Taman Sari was once a water palace and royal garden, just 2 kilometers from Keraton Yogyakarta. It was a bathing complex for the royal family and covered over 12.6 hectares. Built in 1765 during Hamengkubuwana I’s reign, it was in use until 1812.

In 1974, Kawedanan Keprajuritan (previously Tepas Keprajuritan) took over management of Taman Sari and opened it to tourists. The site was restored in 1977 after many buildings were damaged by the 1867 earthquake. Today, Taman Sari is a well-known landmark in Yogyakarta, drawing visitors from around the world. There is also a nearby village where locals share their art, food, and culture.
