Festival Kebudayaan Yogyakarta began on 7 July 1989, when the Jogja Kembali Monument opened. At first, it was called Festival “Kesenian” Yogyakarta, but in 2019, the name changed to Yogyakarta Cultural Festival. One of the most memorable moments was FKY 1990 at Alun-alun Utara Yogyakarta.

That year, 29 Art Parade groups took part, and a fine arts exhibition featured 200 paintings by 200 artists, batik art, and an open arts stage in the North Square. The stage featured 57 groups, including performances by elementary school children, teenagers, traditional dance, comedy, keroncong, and ketoprak.

Festival Kebudayaan Yogyakarta continues to use its five-part theme series. The themes are “Pangan” for 2023, “Benda” for 2024, “Adat Istiadat” for 2025, “Aksara/Bahasa” for 2026, and “Ritual” as the final theme in 2027.

Festival Kebudayaan Yogyakarta introduced the theme “Aksara” to highlight the richness of Yogyakarta’s culture. The word has a special meaning. It comes from the syllables “a” (not) and “ksar” (extinct or destroyed), which together stand for something eternal and timeless.
