Where’s Kaliurang?

Kaliurang is located in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It sits on the slopes of Mount Merapi and is north of the city center. Because of its elevation, the climate is cooler, and the views are often dramatic, especially of Merapi itself.
The name “Kaliurang” is derived from the Javanese words kali (river) and urang (prawn). The area is known for a river that was once home to an abundance of freshwater prawns. Because the river was so full of them, locals began calling the area Kaliurang, literally meaning “Prawn River”.
Historically, the slopes of Merapi have been sacred in Javanese lore: mountains are often seen as realms of spirits, ancestors, and volcano gods.
Cultural and ritual practices around Kaliurang include labuhan (offerings toward Merapi), tahlilan, or selamatan. In the past, local courtiers or villages would bring symbolic offerings, flowers, rice, incense, and perform prayers at certain vantage points toward Merapi’s side, believing that harmony with nature must be maintained. Some of these rituals still occur, though now less formally and often within tourist festivals or special occasions rather than every year in every village.
In the past, ritual events in Kaliurang would be community activities, aligned with volcanic seasons or harvests. Now, they are less frequent, more formal, and sometimes packaged for tourists, but the cultural memory remains alive in local festivals and museum narratives.
How to Get to Kaliurang?

From Yogyakarta city center, you can take a taxi or motorbike (ojek), heading north along Jalan Kaliurang. Public transport: Some Trans Jogja buses head toward the Kaliurang area; then you may need a local ride from a closer stop. The drive takes around 30–60 minutes, depending on traffic.
