Ullen Sentalu Museum

Ullen Sentalu Museum is a cultural museum in Kaliurang, Sleman, on the southern slopes of Mount Merapi, about 25 kilometers north of Yogyakarta City. Founded in 1994 and officially opened to the public in 1997, the museum preserves and introduces the heritage of Java’s royal courts, including Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Pakualaman, and Mangkunegaran. 

Visitors can explore collections of batik, paintings, photographs, manuscripts, and historical artifacts through guided tours. Surrounded by lush gardens and cool mountain scenery, Ullen Sentalu offers a unique way to learn about Javanese history, art, and philosophy while enjoying one of Yogyakarta’s most scenic cultural destinations.

Ullen Sentalu differs from most museums in that visitors can explore it only through guided tours led by museum educators. Each tour gives a unique view of Javanese history and culture.

Attractions

Ullen Sentalu displays batik, paintings, photographs, letters, and historical artifacts from the royal courts of Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Pakualaman, and Mangkunegaran. You can also visit Guwa Sela Giri, an underground gallery where guided tours tell the story of the Mataram dynasty. The museum is set among gardens and forest paths on the slopes of Mount Merapi. This creates a special mix of culture and nature. After your visit, you can try traditional Indonesian and Javanese food at Beukenhof Restaurant, located inside the museum complex. The restaurant has a colonial-style building surrounded by greenery, creating a calm and relaxing place to unwind after exploring the museum

Ullen Sentalu Museum is on Jalan Boyong in Kaliurang, Sleman, about 25 kilometers north of Yogyakarta City. You can reach it by car or an online taxi service. The trip from the city center takes a 45-60 minute drive, depending on traffic.
