Get to Know “Jakal”: A Creative Corridor in Yogyakarta

Jalan Kaliurang is a 25-kilometer road in Yogyakarta, it runs all the way to Mount Merapi and the Kaliurang area. Its name comes from two Javanese words: “Kali” means river, and “Urang” means shrimp. In the past, the rivers along this road were full of shrimp, and that’s why people used to name it Jalan Kaliurang. Locals often call it “Jakal,” short for “Jalan Kaliurang.”
Today, the road is lined with universities, office buildings, hotels, hangout spots, and paddy fields. In the past few years, Jakal has grown fast and become an integrated area for business and creativity. You can find many art galleries, bookshops, and alternative libraries here. Jakal is more than just a road, it’s a lively creative corridor that continues to grow.
