The goal is to provide a respectful, educational, and immersive experience. While you won’t become an Abdi Dalem in the royal sense, you will learn about their duties, mindset, and ceremonial roles. The program highlights Javanese values like Tata Krama (proper behavior), Sungkeman (respect), and Temanggung (responsibility).

The Abdi Dalem experience lets you show respect for Javanese culture, learn by doing, and create memories you’ll remember. Here are the main parts of the program, explained simply:
1. Wanuh Busana
In the first session, you’ll wear the clothing of the Abdi Dalem. Men wear the “Peranakan” outfit style, which includes dark blue Lurik cloth, a Blangkon (traditional headgear), a Nyamping (sarong wrap), and accessories.
Women wear the “Kebaya Tangkeban,” which can be plain or patterned, along with a nyamping, accessories, and their hair styled in a bun called Gelung Tekuk. Dressing this way is more than just putting on a costume. It means you are joining a tradition and taking on a role of service, respect, and ceremony.
2. Marak Sowan
This part takes place in the Pelataran Keben area of the palace. “Marak Sowan” means a procession or respectful visit. This journey shows the daily movements of the Abdi Dalem as they serve. “Trap Sila” is about the manners and ethics of the Abdi Dalem. In this session, you’ll learn how to walk, enter and leave rooms or halls, and how to sit or move in royal spaces, especially in the Bangsal Pancaniti or Ponconiti hall.

The activity takes place every Tuesday and Saturday from 8 AM to 1 PM, giving visitors a chance to experience the royal atmosphere during these hours. The program is held at Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat.
Participants must be at least 15 years old and follow specific dress codes. Female visitors are asked to remove their hijabs, avoid large jewelry, and dress appropriately in accordance with palace customs.
