Yogyakarta is famous for its stunning natural scenery. The city’s charm comes from the landscapes you see almost everywhere. We were lucky to find one of its hidden gems that not many people know about. Kanigoro is a coastal area in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, about two hours from the city center. The “Experiencing Kanigoro” trip lets visitors enjoy the local atmosphere and the beauty of the ocean.

The Experiencing Kanigoro Trip is the first time Gateway of Java has worked with PORTA by Ambarrukmo as the hotel partner. The trip will take place on July 25, 2026, and lasts one day. Everyone is welcome to join a 4.5 km trek from Midodaren Beach to Ngrenehan Beach. No adventure is complete without great partners. We have also joined with Fujifilm Indonesia, Unstoppable Culture, and Hijack Sandals to offer many exciting activities during this trip.
Discovering Kanigoro: Yogyakarta’s Coastal Paradise

It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach Kanigoro from downtown Yogyakarta. Kanigoro is located within the Gunungsewu Geopark, which UNESCO named as part of the Global Geopark Network in 2015. This geopark features a tropical karst mountain range that is thousands of years old and covers 1,802 square kilometers.
During the “Experiencing Kanigoro” Open Trip, you can visit seven coastal areas: Midodaren, Ngrawah, Bopeso, Torohudan, Ngrenehan, Ngobaran, and Nguyahan, and learn about local traditions. Kanigoro was selected for this trip because Ambarrukmo sees great potential in the Gunungkidul region to meet the growing interest in personalized travel experiences.
Kanigoro offers a peaceful getaway from the busy streets of Yogyakarta. When you join this tour, you can share your stories and invite others to explore more about Kanigoro.
